İsdemir, one of Turkey's integrated iron and steel plants, is Turkey's only and largest integrated plant producing long and flat products with a hot rolling capacity of 3.5 million tons/year, which was commissioned in 2008. İsdemir was established on October 3, 1970 in the Payas (Yakacık) region, 17 km from İskenderun, on the Mediterranean coast of southern Turkey. At the time of its establishment, it was located on a total area of 16.75 million m2 (factory area 6.8 million m2 ), including social facilities.
Commissioned in 1975 with a production capacity of 1.1 million tons/year of steel bloom, İsdemir was expanded to a production capacity of 2.2 million tons/year in 1985 with the first expansion. At İsdemir facilities, production is carried out with coke - sinter - blast furnace - steel mill - continuous casting and hot rolling processes at international quality standards. In addition to the domestic market, the products are exported to countries all over the world, particularly in Europe and the Middle East. With the Modernization and Transformation Investments (MTRI), flat product production has been started as of August 2008 in addition to long products. İsdemir's main product range includes billet, coil, slab, hot rolled coil and sheet. In addition to these products, by-products such as coke, oxygen, nitrogen, argon, ammonium sulphate, granulated slag, tar and benzol are also obtained.
All of İsdemir's shares were transferred to Erdemir by the Privatization Administration with the Share Transfer Agreement dated January 31, 2002, on the condition that investments are made in İsdemir for the transition to flat production. On February 27, 2006, 46.2% of Erdemir shares (all of the shares owned by the Privatization Administration) were transferred to ATAER Holding A.Ş., whose shares are wholly owned by OYAK, in accordance with the decision of the High Council of Privatization dated December 01, 2005 and numbered 2005/140, and with this transfer, İsdemir started to operate under the roof of OYAK. Currently, 94.87% of İsdemir shares belong to Erdemir.
The Modernization and Transformation Investments (MTR), which were planned in 2003 and started in 2004, were completed in 2012. With a current liquid steel capacity of 5.8 million tons/year, İsdemir continues its operations as Turkey's only and largest integrated facility capable of producing flat and long products at the same time.
